I'd wipe it and start from the ground up. Did you check your trackpad settings (and that "tap to click" was enabled)?
You can make this a bit cleaner by creating Button Groups. To do this, click + Button Group, give the button group a name (such as Desktops) and then drag/drop the newly created buttons into the group.

Let's make a gesture to open the Applications folder. Click Trackpads in the strip under the BetterTouchTool toolbar, and click Add New Gesture. Click Please Select a Gesture, and under Three Finger Gestures, select TipTap Left (2 Fingers Fix). You'll see a little animation play of how the gesture works - in short, you place two fingers on the trackpad and then tap to the left of them.

Though you can't download BetterTouchTool from the Mac App Store — it's the kind of app that requires far too much system hook-in to be properly sandboxed under Apple's rules — it's still a solid app from a respected developer. It won't brick your Mac, and quite frankly, it's such a good customizable tool that it should be on everyone's Mac. Even if you don't have a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, you can take advantage of BetterTouchTool's other customizations for the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. And it works with the Siri Remote, too!
